Open Letter to Gary Sheffield
Dear Mr. Sheffield, How are you doing today? I'm sure the answer is angry, but it's always polite to ask anyway. Anyway, recently you went on a rant to the New York Post complaining about not winning the Most Valuable Player award last season. While you did have a great season, it was definitely not worthy of the MVP award. Let me explain... First off, let's compare the numbers between you and the winner, Vladimir Guerrero...
Obviously, he had a better season than you. Maybe you didn't see the final numbers? It's not too hard finding them on the internet these days. I'm sure you could even ask some people on your coaching staff, they keep track of that kind of stuff. I'd also like to add that Guerrero also led the American League in total bases and runs. Plus, and most importantly, in the final 15 games of the season, during a close pennant race, he managed to hit for a .463 avg with 9HR to give the Angels a one game win of the American League West. Now I know that you think a big reason why Vlad's numbers are as good as they are is because of Angel Stadium and you think it's easier for right hander's to hit home runs there. According to the numbers though, it's just as easy to hit home runs in New York as it is in Anaheim.
Now I know you're probably rethinking your stance a little bit now, but I just wanted to add a few more reason while you didn't deserve the MVP award. Check out these stats by some of your rivals in the American League East.
I bet your face is a little red by now. Don't worry, I'm almost done. I just came across another reason you didn't deserve the MVP award, his name is Alex Rodriguez. Yes, that Alex Rodriguez. Don't worry, he didn't talk trash you or intentionally sabatoge your chances of winning your first MVP award. What did he do then you ask? Well he just decided to have practically the same season as you.
Oh, one last thing, Guerrero didn't take steroids or get involved with people who distribute steroids or create a distraction for his team by being involved in a controversy involving steroids. A lot of the voters don't like cheaters. Now I know sometimes you can't keep your mouth shut and you like to complain to the press and act like you're the second coming of Aaron, but maybe you should realize that you come off like a baby a lot of the time. Which could explain why you've never won an MVP award. Thank you for your time Mr. Sheffield. Good luck next year. See you in the ALCS.
